More Thoughts on NaNoWriMo

Just a little over a week left until NaNoWriMo kicks off. I’m all in this year for this first time ever, but if you’re still on the fence L.M. Durand has an awesome post on whether or not taking part in NaNo is right for you.

The post outlines some pretty compelling reasons why one should give NaNo a shot. Durand points out that one of the big things that NaNo has going for it is that it’s a community event and that’s definitely one of the reasons I want to give a try.  He says it best when he writes:

NaNoWriMo is a wonderful event that will gather writers from all over the world. Their energy and love for words will fuel your appetite and keep you going. Plus, the forum and your writing buddies will show up in moments of doubts (or at least they should), which can make a real difference.

Another big reason that Durand gives for participating is why I’m tossing my hat into the NaNo ring is something that I talk a lot about here, namely, discipline and routine:

Writing is undeniably hard work. It does take a mountain to publish a book the right way and discipline is key to succeed. The event will help you stay on track and write every day, which can only be beneficial in the end…

…A routine is important to keep you moving forward. Practicing requires discipline AND consistency. NaNoWriMo helps you get into the habit of writing on a daily basis.

Alongside all the reasons why participating in NaNoWriMo, Durand also offers some very insightful cautionary advice on why one shouldn’t participate. I think a lot of it boils down to determining if you have the time, space, and temperament in your life that is going to determine if you should participate. Durand is careful to point out that NaNo isn’t for everyone, nor should it be.

Definitely check out his blog and let me know if you’re going to give NaNoWriMo 2017 a shot.
